    Beautiful work. What sort of springs do you use for the track tensioners? I've used a spring I found that is quite close to a biro spring in size and strength which seems to work reasonably well so far.

      Thank you, I found some springs on the web that are very much like what you described. They work perfectly well with a 5mm dowel pushing against them.

    That's a pretty cool way of making the hubs. What sort of wood to you use for the tire portion of the wheels? I often get issues with fluff and uncut fibers from much of the wood that is readily available to me (usually some sort of Eucalypt, as I'm in Australia). Also, have you tried ebonizing the tire wood using iron acetate (steel wool dissolved in vinegar)? I did this on a mine truck I made for my son when he was 2 and it turned out very nicely, the mystery wood I used must have been very high in tannins as they went almost totally black.

    • @Nansjohn
      @Nansjohn Месяц назад

      I use walnut for the tyres. I’ve never tried to darken them but they look ok after a couple of coats of Danish oil.

    Fascinating video. It's actually quite similar to how I've been making my tracks. I'm in the process (a lengthy process, been going about 2 years off and on so far) of making a model Liebherr 9800 mining excavator in wood for my son. Have the tracks finished and part way through the running gear. Do you have any issues with strength of the links since the grain direction is perpendicular to the tension load? For my links, I made a Y shape, with the grain running parallel to the tracks. Once the tread is glued on, this is very robust (so far). Making the Y shapes proved to be quite tedious though, but I got through it eventually by making jigs to hold batches in various stages of completion for cutting on the table saw. Having made a set of tracks myself only increases my appreciation of your patience and attention to accuracy and detail that is necessary to make these. It's very satisfying to get them finished though.

    • @Nansjohn
      @Nansjohn Месяц назад

      Thank you. I haven’t had any issues with track links breaking yet. I do put a tensioner on my tracks to let them expand and contract as wood never stops moving. I use a spring in the same way the real machine keeps tension with grease and a ram.
